Soulful Sunday ‘Come Dine With Me’

I’m loving the song selections so far for our PH ‘Summer In Our Hearts’ compilation; keep them coming!

Now, I have a bit of a confession to make…one of my many guilty pleasures is watching a marathon of ‘Come Dine With Me’ on a Saturday afternoon. For those of you who are not familiar with the programme; it’s a competition where 4 or 5 complete strangers take turns to prepare and host a dinner party in their own homes for all the respective participants each night in the hope of winning the prize money of £1000.

I’m not particularly interested in winning the money, although I wouldn’t say no if I did. However, I love the thought of hosting a dinner party round my house for random guests. I’m not exactly keen on being on TV and publicly airing any opinions I may have of my guests, so I will simply have to make do with inviting people round for a ‘Virtual’ dinner party.

Let me premise, I do occasionally have personal friends round for dinner to catch-up on each of our lives, but the fantasy is with catering for complete strangers and trying out different recipes on them; their opinions would most likely be unbiased.

So, tell me who would you invite to your ‘virtual’ dinner party, seating 4 (including you) and why?

My choices would be as follows:

1. Steve Jobs – Imagine the stimulating conversations around the table? He would have brought his innovative and revolutionary mindset, sharing his visions and hearing first hand how he thought up the creation of the iPod/iphone…”I Want To Put A Ding In The Universe”!

2. Oprah Winfrey – What can I say! Oprah is one of the most inspirational women of our times and we share the same star sign!!

3. Bob Marley – It’s always nice to have music playing in the background during dinner, but with Mr Marley present there would be no need because he would be the after dinner entertainment as well as singing intermittently. Oh by the way, coincidentally we also share the same star sign!

Being a Vegan, naturally the evening’s menu will consist of a selection of Vegan friendly delights:

Starter: Orange-Ginger Tofu Triangles

Ingredients

Serves: 4
  • 450g firm tofu
  • 225ml (8 fl oz) fresh orange juice
  • 4 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 5 tablespoons rapeseed oil
  • 4 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon minced root ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed chillies
  • 1 spring onion, cut into 2cm (1 in) strips
  • half a bunch fresh coriander, coarsely chopped

Preparation method

Prep: 1 hour | Cook: 45 mins

1.Cut each block of tofu into four thin slices. Cut each block diagonally to make 8 triangles in total.
2.Without separating the pieces, place the block on a cutting board. Cover with kitchen roll, and place a heavy frying pan on top. Set aside for 30 minutes, allowing time for water to drain from the tofu.
3.In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange juice, vinegar, soy sauce, oils, garlic, ginger and crushed chillies.
4.Separate the pressed tofu pieces, and arrange in a baking dish in a single layer. Cover with the marinade, and sprinkle with the spring onion and coriander. Cover with cling film, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, up to 8 hours.
5.Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4.
6.Pour off some of the marinade, so the tofu is covered halfway. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, without turning, until the tofu is golden and most of the marinade has been absorbed.
Main – Palak Dhal (Spinach & Lentils)

Ingredients

Serves: 4
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 onions, halved and sliced into 1/2 rings
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 75g (3 oz) toor dhal (yellow split pigeon peas)
  • 450ml (16 fl oz) water
  • 275g (10 oz) frozen spinach
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste

Preparation method

Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 55 mins

1.Heat oil in a heavy pan over medium heat. Sauté onion for 10 minutes or so, until it begins to turn golden. Add minced garlic and sauté for another minute or so.
2.Add lentils and water to the saucepan. Bring mixture to the boil. Cover, lower heat and simmer about 35 minutes, until lentils are soft (this may take less time, depending on your water and the lentils).
3. Meanwhile cook the spinach in microwave according to package directions. Add spinach, salt and cumin to the saucepan. Cover and simmer until heated through, about ten minutes. Grind in plenty of pepper to taste.
I would love you to share your favourite recipes with me as well as letting me know who you’d have round for dinner.
Enjoy the rest of your Soulful weekend.

  1. Kehinde what a wonderful evening, good company and good food, count me in I will bring the wine. 🙂

  2. Kehinde, that sounds fantastic! Thanks so much for the recipes. Definitely trying the tofu.

Tough to choose only 4 for dinner. Sorry Mom… I would invite…..Miriam Makeba, Martin Luther King, Sonia Sanchez and John Coltrane.

    • Ouleen – thank you for your comment. Don’t look at the dinner party as a one off; just invite 4 guests for the next one and 4 more for the one after.

What I would like to know is what you would be serving up for your guests.

      What’s your favourite recipes?

      Kehinde

  3. hmmm, tough to choose. Think I’ll go with Martin Luther King JR, Jesus, Fela Kuti, Chuck D (my partner would be there too but she doesn’t count in the 4).

    • Hey – don’t worry it’s not the last supper, so you can 4 guests this time and then have another 4 for the next dinner party you organise.

So, what would either you or Kat prepare for Dr Martin Luther King, Jr and Jesus if they came around for dinner?

      Answers on a postcard please!

      😀

  4. I’d have something delivered. You think I wanna be in the kitchen while that chat is going on!
