Ka-Zumba! What a Weekend!

You know the saying; When it rains, it pours. Well that’s what happened to me this weekend…

First the unexpected happened, I was called into work on the weekend which I had not planned, as the filming date was originally cancelled. Good thing I am always learning my lines! Be prepared, be prepared!

This weekend was always going to be busy one as I was invited to ZUMBA PARTY IN PINK an exclusive one-off Zumbathon Fitness Concert hosted by Zumba creator Beto Perez and Grammy Award winner Wyclef Jean in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

I took my sisters along Keisha and Emelia and they really enjoyed the perks of the day, including the Jaguar car they came to pick us up in.

The event was held at Alexandra Palace, north london and the room was buzzing when we arrived. The usual photographers were there along with the PR, Zumba representatives and trainers. I was glad to see my mate Charlie Brooks made it (as she owed me for not turning up at the Virgin Triathlon!). I had a nice chat with Gail Porter who is really funny, I could hang out with her for hours.

Then it was that time again – The Red Carpet! Now you know how I felt when I was on the red carpet a few weeks ago at the Inside Soap Awards (for which I won the Inside Soap Award for Funniest Performance see my blog…). Well this would be worst than that as this time I was wearing less clothing!! I contracted my core and went out on to the carpet with my personality and then some. I did various poses but I had decided that I would not do the ‘Over-the-shoulder-look-straight-into-camera pose! (not in my workout clothes!). Here’s a couple pics I’m happy with:

While I was posing like Tyra Banks (in my mind) I felt someone come up behind me and stroked my arms and embraced me. It was none other than Beto Parze (see picture at the top of the blog). He is a very sweet man and there is an attractive and gentle vibe about him. I took the opportunity to thank him for creating Zumba and told him of my experience with it.

Then Mr Wyclef himself came into the room and again there was a sea of light on the red carpet. I made sure I got my picture.

The Zumbathon itself was great! There were around 4,ooo women and men who came together to fundraise for breast cancer. You could feel the love and energy in the room, it was like a sea of pink prawns (as most people wore the colour pink in various forms; tops, leggings, head bands etc).

Beto and his dancers / instructors were fantastic! They were on a very high stage that was in the middle of the grand room where Beto and his crew showed us the moves we would follow (it felt good that I knew some of the moves from the Zumba Wii game). It was the first time Charlie had done it and the look on her face made me laugh out loud, because in one look her face said ‘What the hell is this and what am I doing here?’ ha, ha, ha!

But there was an intangible force that kept us all on the same page. Women and men from all walks of life, different ages, races, sizes helped each other and kindly apologise when we bumped into each other. I can’t really explain how I really felt but it was in the vein of sisterhood on a large scale and at its best. I urge you to try out a Zumba class, you’ll love it!

The weekend didn’t stop there as I was a nominee at the Screen Nation Award which took place at the Indigo O2. Now when I go to such events I like to take a friend along (NOTE: If you are a friend of mine reading this, your time is coming as I am working down the list – alphabetically). This time I took my dear old friend O’Neil.

The Screen Nation Awards celebrates the achievements of black talent in the UK and internationally within film, television, both in front and behind the camera. This event is like a big reunion as you meet so many people you haven’t seen for a long time. I met up with Levi Roots, Eddie Nestor, Donna Coral, Ellen Thomas, Jimmy Akingbola, Arinze Kene, Zaraah Abrahams, Clint Dyer, Ashley Walters to name a few.

Here I am with funny man and my ex boyfriend (in Eastenders you nosey lot!) Robbie Gee

My girl with the News…Charlene White

…catching up with some of the ‘PH’ ladies, Zena Tuitt, Phenomenal Healthstyle Editor; Lesley Kalu, Property Developer & Interior Designer and Michelle Moore, Sports & Education Development Consultant…

…and yes, I took the mic at the after party and busted some lyrics along side my friend and apprentice DJ Abrantee

It was a dream come true for me when I met with Ms. CASSIE MCFARLANE. I met her when I was 8 years old when she took me to an audition. She was so inspiring to me as she was what I wanted to be – a great actress.

She starred in the film BURNING AN ILLUSION which picked up the ‘Classic Movie Award’ on the night. The film was directed by Menelik Shabazz. THE REAL MCCOY won ‘Best Classic TV Award’. SIR TREVOR MCDONALD OBE won ‘The Edric Connor Inspirational Award’, CLARKE PETERS won the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ and I won ‘Favourite Female TV Star’

Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I am very grateful and will continue to entertain you. I’m aiming for the Oscar next! Can I get it? Yes I can! (as my cousin Barack says).

So that was my weekend and yet another week has begun. I’m hoping to get back on the healthy eating plan but with all the running around I must have lost some weight. In fact, I’m going to have a quick session on Zumba Wii before I go to work.

Check out all the winners and nominees at www.screennation.net

Have a fit week! x
