The Key to Wealth

The key to true wealth in this world or age is to ‘own nothing and control everything’. I believe David Rockefeller and Donald Trump have been quoted using the above words. The rich live by this mantra, and I fully understand why.

Today, I want briefly to talk about purpose and direction. Without a purpose, without a vision, one cannot have direction, one is only driven.

When I talk about those who are driven, think about the rat race. You go to school, you get educated in this system of life, and we come out the other end, being well groomed at being employees.

What do I mean?

Well, you go on the tube in the morning and the majority are going to work, to earn’, in their suits and white collars. Nothing wrong with suits and white collars, but most people bring out suits and white collars either for business or for church and weddings (or funerals), it’s traditional, expected.

And that’s the rat race folks wake up, go to work, earn money, come home, sleep, wake up, get ready, go to work, earn money, come home, sleep et cetera five to seven days a week. And whether you work more hours; you get paid more or less the same.

This is being driven, this is the rat race.

I am not suggesting that money is not a necessity to live and survive, I am saying, it’s no wonder most people’s lives are unfulfilled, because the busyness or vicissitudes of life keeps one distracted from their true path or goal.

And yet the rich, well, they go to work’ (business) when the rush hour is over, (when you can actually drive), or if it’s an early start, they’re in the helicopter. By default, life is wealthy it is not a driven life, it’s one where there’s some control and order – direction.

Now who says you cannot start with a little order and direction from now, no matter what your life circumstances are?

So why did I use the quote ‘own nothing and control everything’ to introduce this week’s post?

Well, when you wish to own something, you spend all your time and effort over it, and in the spirit of competition and ignorance, we do not want anyone else to get it, but yet, if you mess up or make a mistake, someone else has the power to take it away from you as a penalty, because you own’ it. For example, if I know you own’ a million pounds and you injure me in some way, and I am grieved, then guess what, I am going after your million pounds.

It’s the same in life, ownership usually is stated somewhere and most of all in our conduct and how we behave. So in this life, in our quest to own things, we get caught up into the driven world’ and the fear of loss is probably at the forefront of people’s minds.

Now, when you are in control, oh, life takes on a whole new meaning. You do what you want, you live the way you want to live, you dress the way you want to dress, you are in control.

Those in control, do not have to fear about losing anything. Why? Because to be in control does not mean to be an owner; and so, to be directed in life, due to your goals, your dreams and the gifts inherent within you, life becomes enjoyable.

So focus on living a life that’s directed and not being driven to achieve everything. When we are driven, we lose sight of direction.

When you are sitting on a train or aeroplane and you fall asleep, do you know how you arrived at your destination? No! You just arrive, and if it’s your first time to the destination, you do not even know if you are in the right place or not. But if you are awake and are told before take-off /departure, the route to your destination, you have been directed there. So it’s the same in life.

‘Then the LORD answered me and said,’Record the Vision, And inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run.’For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay. From the book Habbakuk 2:2-3 (New American Standard Bible)

I encourage you all to review the vision, the gifts the inherent goals and dreams that were birthed inside you, write them down and start planning to move towards them.

When you are in control, you will have whatever you desire. When you are driven (no vision, just running), you may find you will be running forever.

Next week, I will be breaking down the notion and the power of why control is far superior to ownership.

Stay blessed.

Hi Richard – Thanks again for yet another piece of insight. Before, now if asked, I would have easily have said with no hesitation that I was driven. However, the way you broke it down makes me think differently and has given me such clarity in the true meaning of being in control. I am certainly not a ‘white collar’ type of person (used to be though), I think and behave more like the ‘rich’. Slight problem though…..I don’t have access (notice I didn’t say own) to a helicopter so I have to use either my car (mini adventure) or the sometimes reliable London transport.

    Stay blessed too.

  2. I agree Kehinde – great insight once again! Thanks Richard. I’m doing Mindfulness classes at the moment and it does make you slow down and question whether you are driven – (running around aimlessly to be busy) or focused on a vision and moving towards. Have a great Father’s Day this weekend!
