Are YOU the problem?



Every time you think the problem is out there, that very thought is the problem.

In a world where negativity seems to be the order of the day for so many people, it would appear easier for them to not try and strive for much more in their life.

They would rather not aim too high and expose themselves to the prospect of failure, than aim for the stars and if they miss at least they might touch the sky.

Do you reach for the stars; are you someone who is aspirational, inspirational and motivational? What defines you? What separates you from the crowd? Is it your thoughts, actions or beliefs or is it all three. After all would you agree that not everyone will achieve as much quote on quote Success’ in their life as they would hope for.

I do believe that there are individuals who seem to have been born with a natural innate ability to lead, to be positive, to always strive to be the best they can be whatever the odds. I also believe that those same qualities exist but lay dormant in many people waiting to be discovered and awakened through exposure to personal development in its many forms.

The essence of personal development by its very name suggests a personal journey that one can take to discover, develop, or even enhance one’s own skills. The wise and enlightened understand that they seek growth from personal development not because they are weak but because they want to remain strong.

What can be more personal to you than your skills and attributes which in most people’s minds don’t have an instant monetary value, which may explain why so many people neglect to develop and understand them. These people believe wealth is external and material and do not consider that wealth is also internal, intangible and often concealed from us.

How do we unearth this wealth that exists within us through introspective thinking, a process I call Personal Orienteering‘. This reflective voyage of discovery of self is one where the first place we look for answers to the challenges and issues we have in life is to ourselves.

Knowledge is wisdom self discovery is enlightenment.’

The moment you open yourself up to exploration and discovery, is the moment your real personal asset bank starts to take in deposits and accrue compound interest.

An enlightened person understands this, they understand that if they want change, they have to change, if they want something different to happen in their life they have to do something different in their life. Simply put if we want different outcomes from our lives we must have different inputs in our lives.

I have heard said that a definition of madness is ‘Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.’ I wonder how many of us under this definition, could be classed as mad. Too many people do the same things, have the same thoughts and expect different things to happen to them and when it does not they ask… WHY ME? Instead of asking WHAT IS IT ABOUT ME?

Everything you do must start from you! Change starts from the inside and works its way out. Commit to making the rest of this year, the year of changing the rules of engagement, where you dare to be different, dare to be unique, be afraid of being the same and be very afraid of playing by someone else’s rules.

Every year before this year has only been preparing you for this year, a year of growth, commitment and positive change, a year that belongs to you. This year why not commit to becoming someone you have never been by doing some things you have never done. The question is What will you do differently this year?

What ever you do don’t allow fear and procrastination to mould you into a passive spectator that just sits and watches life pass you by. Make sure you are an active and proactive participant making each day count, where each day, week and month takes you closer to your goals and aspirations.

    Hello Ken – welcome to the PH family, it’s so lovely to have you on board.

    I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article, you touched on some really interesting points. I like to consider myself as unique, someone who doesn’t allow life to just happen to them and sees the glass have full rather than the other way round.

    Once in a while though, fear tries to creep in and I find myself having a ‘Mexican Stand-Off’ with fear which I know deep down is a wasted emotion. I even know the saying and have read the book “Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway”; which helps to put me back in the positive mindset, but could you tell me whether you ever feel the fear and if so, how do you overcome it?


    • Hi Kehinde, apologises for the delay in replying, I have been away getting some sun on my back.

      Kehinde , all of us have fears. Fear of rejection, fear of looking stupid, fear of not being good enough, fear of the past and fear of the future. It is your fears that stop you from doing many of the things you want to do in your life.

      Fear can be like a straight jacket that immobilises and stagnates your growth and development. To control and even overcome fear, you must first know what you fear and try to understand why you fear it. By accepting fear and keeping company with it, you will eventually learn how to conquer it.

      Conquering fear does not mean destroying it. When you conquer something, you take control of it and become its master. No one can ever completely destroy fear and why should you?

      It is an integral part of your protection system whether you like it or not.

      One of the ways I manage fear is by shifting my thinking from being afraid of making mistakes, to being afraid of not making a mistake. If someone is not making any mistakes you can be sure that they are not learning or growing.

      So the next time you fear doing something new as the famous book says “Feel the fear and do it anyway” in the assured mindset and belief that waiting on the other side of your fear is the ‘growth and wisdom’.

My Mum even quoted you today…to remind me to check my mindset : ) …I’d have to agree with Kehinde – there are moments when doubt sets in – I’d love to hear what you and others do to overcome it….

    Yes the mind best friend worst enemy. I can certainly say with my hand on my heart that the problem is an internal one. We often through blame focus on the external issues. Within Afrikan Yoga physical practice there is a spotlight that shines on what is real and unreal through the bodily movements with application of meditation which is an exceptional tool alongside introspective thinking in meditation the mind also finds an outlet to process it’s stresses as well as process and regulate emotional trauma. This activity bring space amongst the negative clamour that allows you to receive, recognise and act upon the inspirational thoughts.
    Recognise the outer energy as a reflection coming from within. When you practice balancing of the mind and body. You are at the centre…. Meaning the centre of the universe…. Your universe, this is to say that what is in your universe, your world is your creation.

    • Thanks Master Afrikan Yoga Teacher Pablo Imani, I agree that what is in our world whether we like it or not is of our own creation. Too often we look externally for change when it starts inside of us once we are ‘still’ enough to take the time to see ourselves for who we really are. Our Soulful Sunday writer Kehinde has written about how meditation has helped her on her journey. It is definitely an underated and under utilised tool. Thanks for sharing.
